A Sneak Peek into Akwa Ibom Tech Week 2023: Africa's New Tech Destination

In a world where technology is revolutionising our lifestyle as well as stimulating creativity, and propelling economies forward, events that bring together technology enthusiasts from all walks of life have become indispensable. One such event is the Akwa Ibom Tech Week(AKTW). Akwa Ibom Tech Week is poised to take over the spotlight in Africa's burgeoning technology ecosystem. This beacon of innovation is set to shine brighter than ever from 30th October- 3rd November 2023.

The Akwa Ibom Tech Week has evolved into a significant milestone on the tech calendar. It is a testament to the state's commitment to technological advancements and connecting with the global tech ecosystem. This upcoming event promises to be a melting pot of innovation— attracting entrepreneurs, investors and industry experts from across the globe while nurturing local talent through inspiration and networking.

In this article, we will provide a comprehensive preview of AKTW 2023, taking a closer look at what to anticipate, its goals, and the paradigm shift it is expected to have on the local and global tech ecosystem.

THE RISE OF AKWA IBOM TECH WEEK

The inaugural edition in 2021 dedicated to "Positioning the Akwa Ibom Youth for Global Success in the 21st Century", set the course for subsequent editions. The purpose of AKTW 2021 was to unite enthusiastic youths to exchange ideas, gain knowledge and practical skills. It involved learning experiences across 11 hubs in 4 separate cities (Eket, Oron, Ikot Ekpene and Uyo).

On the grand finale, tech innovators were given an opportunity to showcase their groundbreaking ideas through pitches. In total, 72 candidates applied to participate in the pitch competition, each vying for the star prize of 1million Naira. However, candidates who didn't make it were not left behind. They were awarded a two-week intensive expert-led training, worth N1.5 million naira per participant.

It was envisioned that these seeds will eventually come to fruition and create opportunities for Akwa Ibom as a tech destination.

AKWA IBOM TECH WEEK 2023

You would agree with me that since it's inception, AKTW's journey has been one of rapid growth and transformation. The 2023 edition however promises to be even more exceptional. It is themed "Africa's New Tech destination"

On reading the paragraph above, the question that is most likely to cross your mind is "What makes Akwa Ibom the Next Tech destination in Africa?"

Akwa Ibom, often referred to as "The Land of Promise", is more than just stunning scenery and rich heritage. Akwa Ibom's emergence as a potential tech destination in Africa can be attributed to several factors that converge to create an environment conducive for technological growth and innovation. Some of which are:

  • Geographical positioning

Akwa Ibom is accessible by air, land and water. Its abundant natural and human resources provide opportunities for valid investments.

Akwa Ibom's strategic location along the Gulf of Guinea means it's not just a tech haven, but also a potential gateway to international markets. It's like having your cake and eating it too – with a side of global expansion.

  • Security and Serenity

The state boasts of its peace and tranquillity which allows for increased productivity. According to Obiora (2021) "Top 10 safest cities to live in Nigeria", Uyo, Akwa Ibom ranks second.

The Guardian stated Akwa Ibom has been announced the cleanest state in Nigeria in 2022 by Clean Up Nigeria. A position it has maintained for the past 4 years. Therefore, Akwa Ibom's captivating environment fosters creativity like nowhere else, making it the perfect backdrop for the next big thing.

  • Government-private sector collaboration

A successful state is defined by its interest in the well-being of its people. Akwa Ibom government together with private sectors are actively involved in the establishment of technology hubs, investment in tech infrastructure, and the provision of incentives to attract tech companies and startups.

There are over 15 tech hubs across major cities in Akwa Ibom such as Start Innovation Hub, Roothub, KodeHauz, FutureLAB, Netisens ICT etc. These hubs are steadily churning out fresh talents ready to take the world by storm.

Programmes such as KodeCamp, HNG internship, ProjectCREATE e.t.c. have in one way or another created platforms for citizens to gain free skills and real word experience in different career paths.

The sitting government, in it's recent meeting with members of the Akwa Ibom Tech community has also notified its interests in ICT development through the ARISE agenda.

To mention but a few.
